The Festival of the Cranes is an annual celebration of the return of the migrating birds to Bosque del Apache, a national wildlife refuge south of Socorro, New Mexico. Thousands of sandhill cranes, ducks, geese, and other birds spend the winter at the Bosque. The Festival is in mid-November and consists of tours of the Bosque, wildlife lectures, and arts and crafts shows.

The Festival of the Crayons, created by Rebecca Titus Taylor, is a companion festival held at the same time of the year. It's a fun display of 48 giant Crayons, including a Whooping Crayon. The Crayons are made of 12" diameter cardboard tubes, painted to look like real Crayons. The tips are made out of hardware cloth and plaster, and they are fashioned to look like each Crayon has been used a different amount. The Crayons range in height from 2 ft to 7.5 ft. The Whooping Crayon is 30" diameter and a whopping 14 ft tall! Some of the Crayons are "traditional" colors and some of the colors are unique to the Festival set, with names like Sandhill, Adobe, Tumbleweed, Strawberry Peak (a small mountain west of Socorro), Banana, Dandelion, and Spam.

The Festival of the Crayons is displayed in the yard of a house on School of Mines Road in Socorro. It’s just for fun - people stop by and take pictures and pick out their favorite Crayon. The Crayons have been featured on the local news a couple of times, and have appeared in magazines, newspapers, and calendars showing public art around the state. The 10th Annual of the Festival of the Crayons was in November of 2006, and during festival, a bird carved out a large nesting hole in the tip of the Whooping Crayon! The 2008 Festival begins November 15th; the Crayons will be on display until November 28th, weather permitting.

There are many volunteers who help with the Festival of the Cranes and the Festival of the Crayons. One of the things they do each year is paint giant crane tracks down the streets leading from the plaza in Socorro over to NM Tech, where the lectures are given. At the Festival of the Crayons house, they paint a flurry of tracks leading to the driveway, as though the cranes had landed there to look at the Crayons!

Each year, more Crayons have been added (the first year there were only 10). Eventually, Becky hopes to make a whole set of 64, and maybe a giant box with a sharpener, and a giant coloring book, too! For more information, please contact Rebecca at crayons@mrsquiggly.com. Hope to see you at the Festival!
