Socorro, New Mexico is home to a unique celebration of the arts...each year, on the Saturday before Valentine's Day, local artists and dedicated volunteers invite the whole town to the annual Community Arts Party, which features hands-on arts workshops for everyone! The event is held in a local gymnasium and in a typical year there will be about 35 workshops and close to 1,000 participants, young, old, and everywhere in between. The Community Arts Party has been an annual event in Socorro since 1997. Over the years, there have been dozens of popular and unique workshops, including flower fairies, paper rockets, face painting, clay sculpture, kaleidoscopes, masks, banner painting, paper rockets, origami, cornstartch mush, decoupage, duct tape roses, corn husk dolls, tie dye, stained glass fish, mobiles, soap sculpture, magic wands, puppets, bat kites, magnets, string art, punched tin, candy flowers, beadie babies, and all kinds of Valentines.

The Arts Party was originally conceived by Ronna Kalish, director of the Performing Arts Series at NM Tech, and Rebecca Titus Taylor, local artist, who has since moved to the Jemez Mountains in northern New Mexico. Rebecca and her husband Mark continue to participate in this wonderful event; each year, she and Mark create a large centerpiece project for the Arts Party, and we hope this gallery of pictures of the Taylor's recent Arts Party projects will inspire you to participate in community arts events in your area!

The Socorro Community Arts Party is sponsored by the Performing Arts Series at NM Tech; other sponsors have included the City of Socorro, NM Arts, the McCune Foundation, Rosie Tripp, city councilor, and C. Bonner Oates, DDS. For more information, please contact Rebecca at artsparty@mrsquiggly.com or Ronna Kalish at rkalish@admin.nmt.edu.
